Four students in Assam suspended for ragging
Guwahati: Four postgraduate students including two girls were suspended for allegedly ragging juniors at Dibrugarh University in Assam, officials said on Friday.

A university spokesperson said the decision to suspend was taken after three first-semester girl students of Political Science on Thursday lodged a written complaint with the vice chancellor alleging that four senior students had 'mentally tortured' them by asking obscene questions.

"The vice chancellor has already ordered an enquiry into the alleged ragging incident and until such time the probe is completed, the four students against whom there are ragging charges have been placed under suspension and asked not to attend classes," P.K. Bhuyan, Dibrugarh University registrar, told sources on phone.

A four-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

"If the four students are found guilty by the probe committee, adequate action would be initiated against them. The university will not tolerate any form of ragging in the campus," Bhuyan said.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Friday urged authorities of all educational institutions to adopt a zero tolerance policy while dealing with students involved in ragging.

"Let us make it very clear that there should be no compromise when it comes to taking action on students found involved in ragging. Authorities of educational institutions should deal with the menace of ragging with a firm hand," AASU adviser Sammujjal Bhattacharya said. IANS.
