Want to become a Pilot - must have Science, Maths in Class 12

July 11, 2008

New Delhi: If you are aspiring to become a Pilot, you will need to study Science with Mathematics till Class 12.

The Aviation Ministry has put on hold the suggestion which makes students, who have studied Science and Mathematics till Class 10, eligible to become a Pilot.

A pilot needs to know the basics of science such as - conversion of different units, basic mathematics and trigonometry to calculate height & distance, speed of sound & light, differential pressure, torque & retardation etc., the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said.

Advancements in technology have increased the automation in cockpits of new aircrafts and have made the task easier for pilots, the Ministry added.

The Aviation Ministry does not want to go ahead with a step, which although sounds logical may put at risk the lives of people.

Interestingly, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), which regulates the licensing of pilots in the US, does not specify any minimum educational qualification to become a pilot.

It has just three criterions to be eligible for commercial and private pilot licences - the applicant should be minimum 16 years or 14 years of age for glider and balloon, he / she must be able to speak, read & understand English and must be medically fit.
