Anti-quota activists on hunger strike again

New Delhi: Around 100 anti-quota activists began an indefinite hunger strike at the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) here on Thursday afternoon.

The protestors accused the government of circumventing a Supreme Court (SC) order on 27 percent quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in academic institutions of higher education and extending the benefit to post-graduate students.

"The Indian Government should implement the quota order in its true spirit", one of the anti-reservationists said.

The Supreme Court on May 16 vacated a Calcutta High Court order staying the implementation of the quota in post-graduate courses, including the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

The apex court also stayed all legal proceedings on the quota issue pending in the high courts of Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

This quota issue came up in the Supreme Court on April 10, 2008 where the controversial law giving out 27 pc quota was passed for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) studying under the elite Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and central educational institutions but it left out the "Creamy Layer" from its domain.

The reservation issue is currently considered to be the boiling subject across India.
