New Delhi: In a bid to check the increasing dropout rate in schools, the Government of Delhi has decided to introduce a new Grading System for students of class V to VII from the current academic session.
The new system of assessment will be implemented in the 917 Government-aided schools of the capital and no student up to Class VII will be detained.
Under the new system, students will be awarded grades from A to D and even those students who score a 'D' grade will be promoted to the next class subject to certain conditions.
"The decision is as per the order by the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry and recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework which says that every student must get eight years of education. We have sent a directive to all Government schools in Delhi in this regard", said Reena Ray, Delhi Education Secretary.
Ray also said that doing away with the traditional system of assessment would not mean that the examination system will be compromised in any way.
"Students will need minimum 75 percent attendance and will have to appear for all examinations", added Ray.
Teachers from various Government schools in the capital have, however, said that the new system is likely to increase indiscipline and bring down the standard of education.
"Students will not take the examinations seriously. How will this help improve the standard of education?", a Government school teacher said.
