Govt committee for autonomy to Delhi College of Engineering

New Delhi: Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) needs to be free from Government control and it must be granted the status of an autonomous institute, suggested a committee appointed by the Government of Delhi to look after the ailing Delhi College of Engineering (DCE).

The Committee, headed by Prof. P.V. Indirasen, Former Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), also suggested regular revision of the institute's syllabus.

Moreover, faculty at the institute should be appointed through a Standing Selection Committee instead of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the committee added.

It has also been mentioned in the report that out of 110 regular faculty members, only 26 have published research papers and out of the 26 research papers only 8 papers had been published in International Journals.

The committee has also recommended that the revision of the syllabus must be a part of the annual report.

The recommendations have, however, been opposed by several faculty members saying that granting the autonomous status will result in favoritism.

"We have maintained the high standards despite facing faculty shortage", said Prof. M.P.S. Mahandroo, President of DCE Teachers Association.
