New Delhi: Lashing out at the media for portraying the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University in poor light, vice chancellor Mushirul Hasan on Wednesday said instead of concentrating on just isolated incidents, they should look for "real" stories in Orissa, Karnataka or Gujarat.

Hasan addressed the students of the varsity in an effort to pacify their nerves and remove their fear in light of the Friday shootout in the Jamia neighbourhood and the consequent arrests of two of the varsity's students - Zia-ur-Rehman and Mohammad Shakeel.

Two suspected terrorists, who Delhi Police said were involved in recent spate of terror bombings in many Indian citizens, were killed in a gunfight on September 18 in Jamia Nagar. One police inspector was also killed in the shootout.

Speaking to the media -- which was present in big force -- after addressing his students, Hasan ridiculed them for sensationalising the whole issue.

"I have never seen so many of the media persons come to any of our functions when we invite them. What have you come here today for? To look for some terrorist?" he asked with a smile.

"The arrest of two students of this university is an isolated incident. And Atif, the suspected terrorist who died, took admission only this August. Jamia is and will always be a secular and reputed educational institution," he added.

Calling the entire turn of incidents when the Muslim community seems to have come under the radar of suspicion, Hasan said media should highlight that an entire community cannot be blamed for the handiwork of a few of the same community.

He also stressed that until their guilt is proved, media should not portray those arrested as terrorists.

"Just because some forces are vandalizing churches and killing Christians in Orissa, does it mean that the entire Hindu community of the state is like that? Then why should such incidents paint a bad picture of the Muslims at large?

"The media, instead of just hyping up the issue and dragging the university into the entire fiasco, should concentrate on stories in other places like Orissa, Karnataka and Gujarat," Hasan said. IANS
