New Delhi: Lady Shri Ram College for Women is all set to make its Economic (Hons) course "accessible" to humanities students from this academic session.
The college will provide a 4 percent negative weightage to students from the commerce stream. A minimum of 60 percent marks in Mathematics will make a student eligible for admission.
According to Kanika Khandelwal, LSR spokesperson, "For some time we felt that non-commerce students were at disadvantage as they did not score impressive marks in comparison to those students who belonged to the commerce stream. However, when it came to performance levels in the course, students belonging to commerce stream performed better than others. So, it was decided to make the Economics (Hons) course more accessible to non-commerce students."
A recent study pointed out that students who opted for Accounts in class XII were not so good when it came to analysis of concepts or even analytical writing, especially with lengthy and composite questions. Looking the other way around, students from humanities usually trumped these questions as it was discovered.
Students from the accounts stream will also be penalized, however. Most other courses - except B Com and Psychology — have the same 4% negative weightage for students with accounts. LSR has also lowered the eligibility criteria for its mathematics and statistics courses.
