Panaji: The stalemate between the Goa education ministry and schools over the implementation of the "no detention" policy up to Class 8, was resolved Friday after the Goa Headmasters Association (GHA) accepting the measure.

The association's decision come just three days before the start of the fresh academic year.

Goa Education Minister Atanasio Monserrate, Education Director Celsa Pinto and the headmasters arrived at an agreement on the implementation of the policy after a meeting on Friday.

"All the issues which we had been raising so far have been clarified. When the schools start day after tomorrow, the education department has promised to provide us with the guidelines needed to implement the 'no detention' policy," Jose Quadros, a spokesperson for the headmasters' forum, told the sources.

Members of the GHA were opposing the Goa government's decision of "hastily implementing" the right to education act, which seeks to ensure that no student up to Class 8 is detained.

Pinto said that the schedule of the academic year would continue as laid out earlier. "The academic year will begin June 6. That does not change. Students who have not cleared their class up to Class 8 will be automatically promoted to their respective upper standard," she said. IANS
