Modi vows to help students from Gujarat in Australia

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said students from the state studying in Australia are free to contact him if they faced any danger.

"The chief minister is worried about the safety of the students from Gujarat studying in Australia after the racial attacks on some students of Indian origin last week. He has asked the students to call up his office or write to him for any help that is required to ensure their safety in Australia," a spokesperson of the chief minister's office said.

The spokesperson said that the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of the chief minister's office is available on the Gujarat government's website.

He said there are a large number of students from the state studying in Australia and they cannot return to their country immediately as they have to complete their studies.

There has been a string of racial attacks on Indian students studying in Australia in recent days. On Sunday thousands of Indians took out a protest march in Melbourne demanding that the attackers be brought to justice.

The government estimates that there are over 90,000 Indians studying in Australia and there are nearly 200,000 Indian-origin citizens. IANS
