Kolkata: Amid discussions in the academic circle on whether to implement the OBC quota reservations or not, seven students belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) have made it to the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) without availing any quota.

In-charge of admissions at IIM-C, Subrata Mitra, said, "The students have made it to the list on the basis of their merit alone. We have already sent offer letters to them".

The selected OBC candidates will also have to submit an affidavit stating that they do not belong to the creamy layer.

Following the 3 percent reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC), a total of nine students from the category would now be admitted to the institute in the coming academic session. Further, the institute has also increased its intake capacity from the earlier 300 to 318 students.

In another development, the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L) has also admitted 49 students from the OBC category this year. The institute is also planning to interview 80 more students in its forthcoming admission process.

"As of now, we have made provisional offers to 49 OBC candidates who were already on the merit list and were interviewed also. However, following a possibility that the number of these candidates, after exclusion of the creamy layer, could be lower than the number of seats reserved, we have decided to conduct some additional interviews", Prof. S. Nair, Chairman of Admissions, IIM-L, said.
