Kalam exhorts youth to join politics

Ahmedabad: The youth today are not inclined towards politics but this must change if the political system in the country is to be cleansed: this was the message former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam delivered here on Saturday.

Speaking to the media at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), where he is taking classes, Kalam said: "The Indian political system needs cleansing. We must improve this system so as to make it honest and transparent."

Kalam is in Ahmedabad to take classes in the institute on Globalising and Resurgent India through Innovative Transformation (GRIT) until November 27 with a break between September 27 and October 24.

The GRIT course has been designed with the help of co-faculty Anil Gupta and revolves around Kalam's 2020 Vision.

It is based on 10 pillars: a nation with less rural and urban divide; where there is an equitable distribution and adequate access to energy and quality water; where agriculture, industry and the service sector work together; where education with value system is not denied to any meritorious students because of societal or economic discrimination; a nation that is the best destination for talented scholars, scientists and investors; where best of health care is available to all; where governance is responsive and corruption free; where poverty has been totally eradicated, crimes against women and children are absent and no one in society feels alienated; a nation that is prosperous, devoid of terrorism and that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership.

Asked if he saw an India free of casteism, Kalam replied: "Higher growth will bring down casteist feeling and caste consciousness." IANS
