New Delhi: The Common Admission Test (CAT), the scores of which are used as a selection criteria for Business Administration Programmes by the IIMs, FMS, IITs, IISc and several other institutes in India as well as abroad might be available biannually.
CAT 2011 ended successfully and the aspirants are waiting for their results on January 11, 2012 while its organizers are busy discussing plan for next year. They are talking on the idea of twice-a-year pattern for the convenience of working class.
The number of candidates appearing for CAT is rising with the fact that an increasing number of institutes are considering CAT's scores for admission. An IIM official said that a significant number of working class want to go for it but due to their routine professional life, attending CAT is difficult for them as compared to fresh graduates.
Convenor for CAT 2011, Prof. Jankiraman Moorthy said that they are discussing making the CAT available twice in a year, especially for the sake of working class aspirants.
However, as the discussions are in its infant stage, nothing is confirmed now. Moorthy added that they would talk on details such as timing of second testing session, testing pattern etc. only in a year when a conclusion is drawn from ongoing discussions.
Last year, after CAT 2010, there were talks that candidates would be able to sit in exam any time of the year but Moorthy explained that as per his knowledge, discussions are on about making CAT available twice a year and not throughout.
Amit Suvarna, a working professional looking forward to appear for test next year said that it would be a positive step. Candidates can apply for CAT in one of the semesters i.e. Fall / Spring according to their convenience.
