Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-D) has stopped providing internet facility on-campus; just as the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) did last year.

This move was firstly instigated by the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M),where internet usage was banned in hostel rooms between 1 am and 5 am to stop its misuse.

The decision has come in as a result of hearsays that students have been misusing the internet facility for downloading movies, games, etc rather than using it for studying purposes.

According to student affairs dean, Mr. Anurag Sharma, such a ban on internet usage has served out two purposes: improving the internet speed and also restricting students from downloading heavy movie and gaming files.

"We are not in the process to completely block the internet yet, but we will restrict the usage as the LAN speed had really become slow. However, I have not received any hacking complaints yet, but the network is being taken care of", Sharma said.

A final year Electrical Engineering student said, "IIT Delhi had limited the LAN usage six months ago also. It was then that students protested and the LAN usage limitations were taken off. This time also, students will find an alternative".

Students often download data to the tune of 500 GB a month; while they are allowed to download only 70-80 MB of data per week, officially.

According to Varun Arora, a final-year Chemical Engineering student, "We are in a habit of starting working on our projects and presentations using internet resources mostly after midnight which is supposed to be submitted next day. And as per the new move, when authorities will chunk the internet, we will be the sufferers".
