Indian students among the best - Oxford University

Oxford: The University of Oxford which has groomed distinguished personalities including country's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia, has expressed its keenness to have more Indian students on its campus as they 'are among the best in the world'.

University Chancellor Chris Patten said, "We want more Indian students because we want the best in the world to come to Oxford."

India, currently figuring as the world's sixth largest source of students at the university, has 257 students at the Oxford University. Most of the Indian students are enrolled at the Said Business School of the varsity.

"About a quarter of the Indian students are pursuing their MBAs, but I would like to see more students in Social Sciences and Humanities, doing both under-graduate and post-graduate work," Chris Patten added.

One-third of the student population at the Oxford comprises of students from another Asian giant - China. Though Indians are less in number, they have always surpassed Chinese in terms of scholarships obtained.

According to an Oxford journal, last year, Indian students received as many as 54 different scholarships, including the prestigious Rhodes scholarship. "They (Indians) probably got more than China," the Chancellor added.

"I hope, as we develop our endowments, we will be able to offer many more scholarships to post-graduate students in the next few years", Patten said.
