Melbourne: In a fresh attack, a 22-year-old Sikh youth was assaulted by a group of teenagers who tried to remove his turban and cut his hair. Two of the attackers have been arrested.

Resham Singh "was assaulted by a group of six teenagers. They tried to remove the turban of this youth and cut his hair", dailynews365.com reported Tuesday.

Singh said the group first abused him and left and again came back with more people and a pair of scissors. They tried to remove his turban and to cut his hair.

The incident took place Monday at the station in Dandenong, a Melbourne suburb. With this attack, the number of victims has risen to 19 since May 9.

Singh said: "My friends tried to save me", adding the "education agent back in India never gave me any information of how hard life will be here".

A student of hospitality, Singh came from Punjab six months back to study in Australia.

Two of the attackers were arrested.

"The youths from Dandenong - aged 13 and 15 years - were charged with intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury and assault in company," the report quoted a police spokesperson as saying.

Nearly 90,000 Indian students are studying in various Australian education institutions.

A series of attacks and robberies on Indian students had been highlighted prominently in the Indian media, which had led to statements of assurance on safety from the highest level of the Australian government. IANS
