Exams postponed in troubled Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: Life in the troubled Kashmir Valley returned to normalcy on Tuesday, as the Common Entrance Test (CET) for various professional courses and university examinations were deferred due to continuing unrest.

Life in the rest of the valley limped back to routine after three days of shutdowns and protests as markets, banks, educational institutions, traffic and government offices functioned normally.

But shops and businesses remained closed amid violent protests in the old city area of the summer capital Srinagar.

"One protester was injured with a rubber bullet fired by the security forces as a mob of stone-pelters attacked the Nowhatta police station in the old city area," a police officer said.

"The injured person was taken to hospital for treatment and the attending doctors have described his condition out of danger," he added.

The protests in the area erupted when people returned from attending the prayers for Javaid Ahmad Bhat, 22, who was killed on Saturday after a rubber bullet hit him in the chest fracturing one of his ribs which pierced his heart.

Clashes between agitated protesters and the security men forced closure of markets, traffic and businesses in the Nowhatta area on Tuesday afternoon.

The Board of Professional Examinations on Tuesday said the CET for various professional courses has been re-scheduled for September 13 and 14.

The CET could not be held on schedule in July this year because of surcharged atmosphere in the Valley and the Jammu region amid bitter Amarnath land row.

The Kashmir University also issued revised date sheets for various post-graduate examinations that had been postponed repeatedly in the wake of violent protests and shutdowns in the valley during the last two months. IANS
