Two new campuses by Kashmir University

Srinagar: Expanding education to newer frontiers, the University of Kashmir will soon set up two new campuses in the frontier regions of Kargil and Kupwara.

The move will surely help meet the ever-growing demand for higher education in these two remote areas.

The decision was announced, following a meeting of the Kashmir University Council (KUC) chaired by Governor Lt Gen (retd.) S K Sinha.

State Chief Minister and Pro-Chancellor of the University, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Vice-Chancellor Riyaz Punjabi, Minister for Higher Education Gulchain Singh Charak, Vice-Chancellor of University of Jammu, Amitabh Mattoo were among the dignitaries who attended the meeting.

The twin Universities of Kashmir and Jammu will now have as many as eight campuses spread across the state, including the two new campuses.

Further, the varsity is already working on setting up new campuses at Anantnag, Baramulla and Leh. The varsity administration is also confident that the campus at Anantnag will be functional by next month.

In another major development, Kashmir University has also okayed the renewal of Mushir-ul-Haq Chair for inter-faith studies.

The proposed chair would be established in the name of the former vice chancellor of the university and a renowned Islamic scholar who was assassinated by militants on April 10, 1990.
