Ranchi: The Jharkhand government has come out with an innovative idea to educate children about the contribution and valour of the state's freedom fighters. The home department is getting comics published that are based on the lives of freedom fighters including Birsa Munda, Siddho and Kanhu and Jatara Bhagat.

Birsa Munda is revered as a god in Jharkhand. He fought against the British in 1857. He was caught by the British army and hanged. The airport and Ranchi jail are named after him.

Their contributions to India's freedom struggle are taught in schools.

The comics describe the valour and the reasons that prompted the freedom fighters to raise their voice against British rule. The comics have pictures of fight incidents and freedom fighters being hanged.

"The comics describe the life history of the freedom fighters. Children love reading comics and this could be the best way to educate them about freedom fighters of the state," said their writer Suman Prasad Mehta.

He said: "All the prominent freedom fighter's life history will be highlighted through the comics."

The comics are likely to hit the stands in three months and will be sold through book stalls and at school and government libraries.

The state government move has been welcomed by the freedom fighters' kin. "This is a good move of the state government. We are happy that after many years the state government thought about highlighting the lives of the freedom fighters," said Praveer Nath Sahdeo, kin of freedom fighter Lal Rajendranath Sahdeo of Ranchi.
