Dhoni disappoints old college, wants to join St Xavier's

Ranchi: Indian cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's decision to pursue graduation from St Xavier's college here has disappointed teachers and students of Gossener College, where he had enrolled for a bachelor's course in commerce in 1999.

Dhoni got admission to Gossener College after clearing his higher secondary from DAV School, Shamali.

"Dhoni got admission in 1999 through the sports quota to pursue B.Com. His roll number is 288 and he is still a student of our college," Siddharth Ekka, principal of Gossener College, told IANS.

Asked about Dhoni's decision to pursue his graduation from St Xavier's college, he said: "It is up to him to decide from where he wants to pursue higher studies. We would love it if he pursued his education from here."

Dhoni on Wednesday met Nicholas Tete, principal of St Xavier's College, and expressed his desire to enrol for its B.Com programme.

"Dhoni will be admitted through the sports quota but he will have to submit the relevant documents," Tete said.

To get enrolled in St Xavier's, Dhoni will need a Transfer Certificate (TC) and his marks sheet from Gossener College.

Dhoni's decision may have brought cheer to the students and teachers at St Xavier's, but people at Gossener are a disappointed lot.

"Dhoni is a star and he should pursue higher education from the college he enrolled himself in nine years ago when he was not a star. His stardom should not come in the way of choosing an institution," said Rahul Kumar, a first year student at Gossener.

"Dhoni should not break our heart. It will be great for us if he pursues his studies from his old college," said Rinki Munda, a second year student of the college.

Authorities at Gossener College added that Dhoni had even filled in the form to appear for his first year exams, but could not do so as he was selected to play Ranji Trophy matches. IANS
