Mallappuram: The Malappuram Special Centre of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will be launched by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal on Dec 24 at the developing Chelamala campus nearby Perinthalmanna.
Sibal's Deputy E. Ahamed will preside the occasion as Chief Guest and State's Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has also been invited. AMU Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis will present a report and P.K. Abdu Rabb, Minister for Education will welcome the gathering.
The campus has been raised by pre-fabricated structures which includes two academic blocks, an administrative block, 20-odd staff quarters and five hostel blocks. The Pre-fabricated structure had cost Rs. 13 crore out of Rs. 75 crore allocated by the Central Government.
AMU Malappuram Centre Director P. Mohammed and AMU Court member Syed Basheerali Shihab Thangal informed that classes will be held in new campus by March 2012. Currently, classes of BALLB and MBA programmes are being held at a rented building in Perinthalmanna town.
Officials of AMU informed that in the first phase, a women's college and a women's polytechnic would be developed on the campus and in the next phase, an engineering college, a law college, a medical studies and research centre, a vocational college, a centre for hotel management studies anda college of Unani medicine would be started.
