Curriculum panel to decide on Kerala text book
Thiruvananthapuram: The curriculum committee would meet on Thursday to consider the interim report of the special committee the state government appointed to look into the controversial Class VII social science text book, Kerala Education Minister M.A. Baby said here on Tuesday.

"Certain additions and deletions have been suggested by the committee which looked into the text book. But the question of withdrawing the text book or complete deletion of any chapters won't arise," Baby told reporters here after receiving the committee report from eminent historian K.N. Panicker.

For the past three weeks, Kerala has been witnessing protests which the Congress-led opposition parties have now taken to streets, demanding the withdrawal of the text book.

The opposition has said the text book is vague, it injects communist ideology, and has distorted the rich history of the country.

"There is no question of any minor addition or deletion. The need of the hour is withdrawing the text book," said Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy while taking part in a protest meeting where state Youth Congress president Siddique's indefinite fast entered the seventh day on Tuesday.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front met here and decided to strengthen its agitation against the withdrawal of the text book.

"There is no mention of Sardar Patel and Raja Ram Mohan Roy. The Father of the Nation (Mahatma Gandhi) and Jawaharlal Nehru find a few vague references and the Quit India Movement does not figure at all in the text book. This has to be withdrawn," UDF convenor P.P. Thankachen told reporters. IANS
