Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters that the steps for the welfare of the minority community were being taken after a report was submitted by Local Administration Minister Paloly Mohammed Kutty, who studied the Sacchar Committee recommendations.

"We have decided to give 5,000 scholarships to Muslim students who pursue graduate and postgraduate courses. They will be eligible (to get) Rs.3,000 to Rs.5,000 every year," Achuthanandan said addressing a news conference here after the weekly cabinet meeting.

Muslim's in Kerala account for 24 percent of the 32 million population.
