Thiruvananthapuram: A school for the children of non-resident Indians of Kerala got an official nod on Monday after Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan cleared a proposal for it.

State-owned Norka, an organisation that meets the needs of non-resident Keralites (NRK) and NRK returnees, decided to clear the proposal for setting up a residential school here.

A board meeting of Norka headed by Achuthanandan at its meeting here decided to earmark 50 acres of land in the district for the school.

"Achuthanandan has agreed and we will commence the institution from the next academic year," said ruling Left Democratic Front legislator Manjalamkuzhy Ali, who is also a board member of Norka.

"It will have all facilities of an international school. The school will follow the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus," Ali told sources.

There are around two million NRKs in the state which also has around 1.2 million NRK returnees.

He said the meeting also decided to set up Norka offices in all districts of the state.

"Right now, there are only three offices at Kochi, Kozhikode and here. It has been decided to set up 11 more offices," Ali said.

"Another decision that was taken was to have an advisory committee of Norka in the countries where Keralites work in large numbers.

"This committee will work in tandem with Indian embassies and would basically be the first stop for all Keralites in such countries," said Ali. IANS
