High court denies quota seats to students making it on merit

New Delhi: Delhi High court has ruled that any reserved category student who qualifies the entrance exam under the general category must take admission under the same and not from the reserved pool.

The court gave this ruling while hearing the petition filed by two women candidates, Renu Vashisht and Alka who could not secure the seat in the course of their choice (diploma course in electronic and telecommunication course) since some of the reserved category students who competed under the general category where also counted in the reserved category. The petitioners alleged that the government followed a wrong policy in the admission procedure.

However, the government defended its decision and told court that it had offered seats to all meritorious candidates under general category(including reserved category students), but when qualifying reserved category students insisted on availing their quota they had to give in to their demands.

On hearing the whole matter Justice Ahmed directed the government to grant admission to the two petitioners and held that a reserved category student qualifying through merit should be given seats only from this category and not from the reserved pool.
