| 70-30 Formula in Maharashtra opposed July 10, 2008 Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has stayed the admission procedure in junior colleges for three days after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Thane Corporator, Pratap Sarnaik opposing the 70:30 Formula. The 70:30 Formula, which came into effect in 2003, says that 70 percent of seats will be reserved for students from the same district in which the institute is located and the remaining 30 percent seats will be allocated to students coming from other districts of the state. The admission process has been put on hold till Monday until the PIL's next hearing in the High Court. Sarnaik alleged that the 70:30 Formula would cause injustice to deserving students and defeat the purpose of attaining high merits. The decision was taken at a late night meeting at the residence of Deputy Director of Education, Govind Nandede. Most colleges in Mumbai have already come out with the first and second cut-off lists. It is still not clear whether students already admitted to class XI will be affected by this ruling. |
