Mumbai Univ - Opt for 2 grad courses simultaneously
Mumbai: The University of Mumbai has come up with a noble idea for youngsters who find it difficult to decide which graduate stream they should enroll in. It is planning to allow students to study two full-time courses at the same time.

Taking up two courses may entail double the expense and twice the work but the idea is worth appreciating in the light of the fact that it multiplies further education, jobs or career.

Many students want to go for just a BA, BCom or engineering course while there are others who want to pursue more than one passion as per their potential. SK Ukrande, Dean (Technology) at the University of Mumbai said these students will be allowed to take up two courses simultaneously.

Three months ago Ukrande put a proposal in the varsity's Academic Council for permitting students to study two degree programmes at the same time. The report is yet to be finalized by the varsity's management and Academic Council.

The report stated that students can choose for one of the many combinations such as enrolling for two degree courses as a full-time student, signing up one as distance education or taking up one as certificate or diploma programme, an option which always existed.

Students just need to be eligible for both the courses as well as meeting the attendance requirements for both. Ukrande also informed that if the idea picks up in popularity, a second shift for colleges might be considered for providing students flexibility and convenience.

With this plan, the scope of better careers has increased but it has a setback too as the University has a packed examination schedule throughout the year. In case if two examination clashes, students will have to sit for one of the exams for the next time.

Apart from the above plan, some sources are also indicating that the University is also considering starting Honours Programmes, an idea which is new for Mumbai city.
