Arjun Singh welcomes OBC quota order

New Delhi: Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Arjun Singh, has welcomed the Supreme Court's decision vacating the Calcutta High Court order staying implementation of 27 percent quota reservations for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in post-graduate courses offered by higher education institutions including the elite Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

Commenting on the apex court's move on the quota reservation, Arjun Singh said, "There was no restriction for PG students even in the judgement by the Supreme Court on April 10."

Even as the Supreme Court on Friday suspended the Calcutta High Court anti-quota order, the Centre is planning to file caveats in state high courts to ensure smooth quota law implementation, sources said.

Official sources added the HRD Ministry, irked by the Calcutta High Court's exparte order staying implementation of the OBCs quota in IIM-Calcutta, was writing to the Law Ministry to instruct Standing Counsels to file caveats in their respective State High Courts.

This, said the sources, will ensure that the High Courts hear the Centre's arguments before admitting a petition.
