Puducherry: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved a grant of Rs.12.27 lakhs for the education of Tsunami-effected children in Puducherry, Lok Sabha member M. Ramadass said.

In a statement released here, Ramadass said that the move would immensely help students from the fishermen community who reside in the coastal villages of Puducherry.

He further added that a list of 341 students has been sent to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) seeking his approval.

Tsunami was an undersea earthquake that occurred on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.

Along with widespread damage, the Tsunami resulted in the death of more than 13,000 people in the coastal areas of India.
