Punjab Governor urges achieving quality education
Patiala: The Punjab Governor and Chancellor of Punjabi University Retd. General SF Rodrigues, in his recent speech, addressing students at the convocation ceremony in the Punjabi University stressed upon improving the quality of higher education in the university by creating an atmosphere of discipline, dedication, hard work and relentless pursuit of academic excellence.

He said that the institutions should always be in the process of constant innovation to improve and upgrade their knowledge to face the emerging challenges of globalization.

"Convocation is an important milestone in the educational journey of a student. Many see it as the final pursuit after which they can proceed with their entry in the working environment while others see it as an opportunity to pursue higher studies," said the Chancellor while congratulating students upon awarding them their degrees.

In order to develop the state and foster its growth to achieve academic brilliance the Governor, to encourage the youth called upon academicians, educationists and intellectuals to develop action-oriented and progressive programmes.

"The emphasis must be to encourage the children to go to the grass root level and enjoy in our rich traditions and heritage," he said.

Exhorting students to face the challenges of the outside world with a positive attitude, he said that, "The focus of students in this competitive age should be to enhance their capabilities and confidence to achieve excellence through commitment, vision, determination and hard work."

The Malwa Belt, facing the threat of drugs was also on the track list of the Governor and it is in this regard that he urged the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to fight the hazard at all costs and with every wherewithal at the state's disposal.

"Awareness was the only solution to the growing menace of drug addiction as well as that of female feoticide in rural and urban areas. Universities have a special role to play in fighting against such social evils by organizing seminars, workshop and interactive sessions and by motivating students and faculty to take this challenge as a personal crusade," said the General.

Earlier, after declaring the convocation open, General Rodrigues awarded the degrees of PhD. He also presented Honoris Causa degrees to famous poet, lyric and film Director Gulzar, Gurbachan Singh Randhawa and former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral.

Gujral was not present on the occasion. PA Sangma, former Speaker Lok Sabha, appreciated the role of teachers and said that it is very noble and pious profession.

Gulzar said he had won many awards and degrees in foreign lands but the D.Litt degree conferred upon him today will remain special to him.
