School students to judge councillors

Jaipur: In a unique project, students of schools will now judge the performance of municipal councillors in Rajasthan.

The project has been started from Udaipur where students of Class 8 and 9 are busy appraising the municipal representatives. The idea has come from voluntary organisation Loktantrik Mulya Sangrask Manch.

The students, in a batch of about 50 from select schools, are visiting localities and requesting a member from each household to fill a questionnaire. Students from 112 government and private schools are involved.

"In all, a total of 5,600 students are undertaking this survey. The views of 100,000 people will be taken," said Rakesh, a Class 10 student.

The students will rate the councillors according to their performance.

Two key points that will be considered are whether a councillor has given importance to his/her work and if the councillor has favoured friends or close associates.

The performance process will get completed by the first week of March and the result is likely to be announced soon thereafter.

Meritorious councillors will be honoured for their good performance and hard work.

There are plans to appraise the performance of legislators, MPs and other public representatives of the city. IANS
