CBSE plans to lighten schoolbags for kids

New Delhi: The delicate shoulder of schoolkids is soon going to feel less weight on their shoulder as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to reduce the burden of schoolkids.

A circular regarding this has been sent to CBSE schools across the country asking them to implement a slew of measures to lighten schoolbags, especially for primary kids.

"The number of prescribed textbook for a particular class should not exceed the number of prescribed by the NCERT for the particular class," said Vineet Joshi, Chairman, CBSE.

He further said, "Schools should ensure strict compliance with regard to the number of books prescribed so that students and parents are not burdened academically or financially."

Anita Rampal, Professor in the department of education at Delhi University (DU) and chairperson of the NCERT's primary textbook development committee said, "There's a lot that needs to be done when it comes to reducing the load children carry to school. Several private schools insist on a number of unnecessary books. When I recently went to a book shop and asked for an NCERT text, I was immediately offered a whole range of workbooks, which were double the price of the textbook."

All the schools have been asked to maintain the schoolbags of children upto class II in the school itself and setting up a class library.
