New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for the introduction of an Amendment Bill in the Parliament to overcome the "Practical Difficulties" in implementing the provisions of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006.
The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Bill, 2008 was approved at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday.
After the Cabinet meeting, Information & Broadcasting Minister, P.R. Dasmunsi said, "The legislation will be introduced immediately".
It was originally decided that the implementation of Quota Reservations in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Central Universities would roll out from the 2007-08 academic session.
The implementation was, however, delayed by almost a year.
With the Amendment Bill, higher education institutions will now have to provide for the quota rollout to start from the current academic session and complete it over the next three years by the 2010-11 academic session.
Most of the Central Universities proposed to implement 9 percent OBC Reservations every year whereas there are a few universities which have proposed to implement OBC Reservations in two years or one year.
