New Delhi: The Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) has called for a nationwide strike by teachers of the 22 Central Universities across the country on September 5.
"This strike is a symbol of protest against the non-submission of the University Grants Commission's Pay Review Committee (PRC) report. Office bearers will be going on a day-long hunger strike in front of the UGC office", the FEDCUTA said.
Faculties from the Delhi University (DU), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will participate in the nationwide strike.
According to Aditya Narayan Mishra, President FEDCUTA, "We met the UGC Chairman following the August 7 strike and he assured us that the report would be submitted within 15 days, which is August 29. But we came to know from various media reports that the report may take another three to six months. Therefore, we have decided to resort to agitation".
The extension of Chadha Committee, whose term is scheduled to finish on September 5, might make the agitation more serious.
"16000 teachers from the 22 Central Universities will go on an indefinite strike if the Chadha Committee is extended", said senior officials at FEDCUTA.
S.K. Thorat, Chairman of UGC said, "I have not received any information from FEDCUTA regarding the strike and would not like to comment on its status via media. If they come to me, we will definitely sort out the issues".
