Revised pay scales fail to impress teachers

New Delhi: The Pay Review Committee of the University Grants Commission (UGC), headed by Prof. G.K. Chadha, former Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), on Friday recommended an increase of over 70 percent in the pay scales of university and college teachers across the country besides other allowances.

Teachers from Central Universities are, however, unhappy with the recommendations of the Pay Review Committee.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Teachers' Association President, Kamal Mitra Chenoy said, "It is a mixed bag. The basic thing we expected from the Pay Review Committee was an upgradation of the teachers' pay scales, which we have not got."

Chenoy further said, "The Committee was setup to revise the pay scales to attract and retain talent. Only an increase in the basic salary will attract new talents to the profession and not an increase in the allowances."

Prof. Chenoy also termed the creation of a new hierarchy, by a new categorization of various teaching posts - terming lecturers as assistant professors; creating three new positions - senior associate professor, senior professor and professor of eminence, as "uncalled for".

"Chadha's report would go down in history as the worst report for teachers. He has completely failed to understand the mentality of teachers. They have not improved the pay scales and instead created a new hierarchy", Chenoy added.
