New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has submitted significant recommendations to the Ministry of HRD to check any "irregular practices" in the deemed universities.

The UGC has suggested regular monitoring and mandatory accreditation should be made compulsory for deemed universities.

"As per UGC guideline an institution must have accreditation by either National Board of Accreditation or National Accreditation and Assessment Council for being given deemed university status. It also sets a number of quality parameters like teacher-student ratio and other facilities," said a senior HRD Ministry official.

Presently accreditation is not mandatory for deemed universities. The UGC has also recommended for deemed universities to maintain a teacher-student ratio of one to 20 for general courses.

These guidelines have been framed by the UGC after it received a number of allegations about these institutions resorting to corrupt practices.
