New Delhi: Its celebration time for students as well as faculty in the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), as the Ministry of Human Resource Department (MHRD) has given nod to women access to Maulana Azad Library (MAL) on Thursday.
The decision was taken in lieu of petitions submitted by AMU students and teachers. It was conveyed by an official of the Ministry in a telephonic conversation to the University that they cannot refuse knowledge and entry to the library. Though, a letter is yet to be sent to the University.
So far, only either Post Graduate women students or those women, who are enrolled for Professional Courses, were allowed to enter the library but now, Undergraduate women can also access it.
Asst. Prof. at Women's College, Shadab Bano, who has been a part of the campaign looking for equal rights for women students in AMU said that the news is a "landmark" in itself.
Congratulatory messages were sent in the Abdullah Hall, where the Women's College and hostels are situated. A student, Raisa Ahmed said that they just hope that there is no more waiting with the administration announcing it soon.
However, few of the faculty members and students are skeptical about the news. A Senior Faculty Member at Women's college was of the view that it is good news only if it is implemented in time.
She further added that Abdullah Hall has strict rules; it is not just about to permit them to leave it. Other issues should be taken care of. A schedule should be drawn up; girls may be allowed to access the library on specific days and for prescribed hours, so as to keep a check on their movement.
