Lucknow: A medical college in Mauritius has instituted two scholarships in honour of a Kargil War martyr from Lucknow, who received the highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra, posthumously, an official said on Friday.

"SSR Medical college, the first medical college of Mauritius, will award scholarships, named after Capt Manoj Pandey, to students (a boy and a girl)," R.P.N. Singh, the founder of the college, who is in the city these days, said.

Singh added that because he hailed from Uttar Pradesh he wanted to keep the memories of Capt Manoj Pandey alive.

"The tution fees would be borne by the college. The candidates would also be provided free boarding and lodging on the college campus, along with the required books and $50 per month towards personal expenses," said Singh.

The basis of selecting the students would be their economic status as well as merit.

The first two students would be selected from Lucknow.

"The college administration has asked my family to select the two candidates. It is really a privilege for me," Gopi Chand Pandey, father of Capt Manoj Pandey, told sources.

Capt Manoj Pandey who belonged to Lucknow, died during the Kargil war in 1999. IANS
