Seminar on "Prospects of Engineering as a career choice" Renowned Industry experts and educationist as speakers Employment prospects and entrepreneurial skills highlighted Chennai: Rajalakshmi Engineering College organized a seminar on "Prospects of Engineering as a Career Choice" on Sunday, May 4, 2008 at Rajalakshmi Convention Hall, MVJ Towers, Chennai. The speakers included Mr. Dr. D. Viswanathan, Vice Chancellor, Anna University, Mr. Jayaprakash Gandhi, renowned Educational Consultant, Mr. G. D. Sharma, Vice President - HR, L&T (ECC) and Mr. Balasubramaniam, Director (Life Sciences) Cognizant Technology Solutions. Speaking at the seminar which was well attended by over 450 participants comprising of students and parents, Mr. D. Vishwanathan, Vice Chancellor elaborated about the availability of more than 60 branches of engineering courses available at Anna University and affiliated colleges. He stressed that "it is not the branch that matters, but the performance and understanding of the subject. The students should know that all branches of engineering have equal value and he wanted the parents to encourage their wards to perform well" He further added "that the parents should not be complacent after admitting their children in an engineering college and should monitor the performance closely. The performance of the students is affected on account of distractions due to Television programmes, mobile phones, etc. and parents should ensure that such distractions do not affect the performance of the students. He added that employment opportunities are very bright but he also insisted on the Entrepreneurial skills." Mr. Jayaprakash Gandhi, spoke about the lesser known courses, which have huge employment potential. He also spoke about choosing a branch as per the choice of the student and parents should only facilitate the selection process. Students should not be forced by the parents to choose any branch. He stressed upon the need for preferring core branches and the importance of employability and soft skills development and communication. Mr. G. D. Sharma lamented about the lack of qualified, employable candidates in all spheres and stressed upon the development of capabilities of the students. Mr. Balasubramaniam emphasized the importance of Bio technology and related branches. Dr. K. Sarukesi, Principal, welcomed the gathering and Dr. Mrs. Thangam Meganathan, Chairperson of Rajalakshmi Engineering College proposed the Vote of Thanks. About Rajalakshmi Engineering College The college has been awarded ISO 9001 : 2000 certificate for academic standard by internationally acclaimed TUV Suddeutschland, Germany. An MoU has been signed by Rajalakshmi Engineering College with AEC Business School for a Consultancy project to deliver the academic programme for three semesters to the students enrolling for Diploma in Mechatronics Programme in Singapore Polytechnic, Singapore. Our EEE, Mechanical and MBA Departments would be involved in delivering this programme. REC has signed up an Operational Arrangement with Sunderland University, U.K. This agreement provides for the conduct of awareness programmes such as presentations, seminars for students in mutually beneficial study and research areas The MOU with University of Wolverhampton, U.K enables student and staff exchange, joint research particularly in the fields of Engineering, Management, Teacher Education, value added courses and short term programmes. This collaboration also explores the possibility of offering specialized programmes in the field of Engineering. Rajalakshmi Engineering College signed an MoU with University of Rigina, Canada for research & academic collaboration. This collaboration includes joint research, exchange of staff and students and facilitation for higher studies. This also aims at having research programmes in Engineering and Business Management. In order to offer value added programmes in Latest Software Technologies to the staff and students an MoU has been entered into with IBM. An MoU has been signed with Super Auto forge Ltd., Chennai which is a mechanical Engineering based manufacturing industry for Inplant Training, Industrial Visit, Project Work, mutually beneficial training and R & D activities. REC has entered into an MoU with Infosys for the 'Campus Connect', programme. The programme envisages conducting seminars and faculty workshops in College, publishing Infosys courseware on the web, sabbatical for Professors and Project work for students. |
